Just a quick reminder of two important events this week: 1 - Rally at City Hall on school overcrowding Please attend, and bring the kids! It will be a kid-friendly, toddler friendly rally. Parents and kids from many Manhattan schools will be there, and many elected officials will be speaking. For more information, please contact Amy Strassler Goldstein: citimouse@gmail.com. Rally starts at 3:30 on the west side of City Hall Park, along Broadway. From 4-5, speakers, including elected officials, will address the rally from the City Hall steps. Before the rally, people will be gathering at the PS234 yard at 2:45 and at Teardrop Park in Battery Park City, then walk together to City Hall. Please be sure to tell all of your friends about the rally! Word-of-mouth is the most effective form of communication. It is for everyone who cares about our kids' education - parents of school kids, parents of toddlers and infants, parents to be, and anyone else who cares about quality education and our kids' future. Let's get a big turnout - Mayor Bloomberg and Chancellor Klein will notice, and so will the press. 2 - Meeting of Community Education The CEC D2 will meet to further discuss a response to the Dept. of Ed.'s "Blueprint" for dealing with overcrowding in District 2. Parents from PS2344 will also present the CECD2 with a written response to the DOE Blueprint. We will tell the CEC that many of the recommendations in the Blueprint, such as relocating PS234 fifth graders to other schools, are not in the kids' best interest, do not represent good educational policy, and are not acceptable to children or parents. Instead, the DOE needs to acknowledge the overcrowding problem and pay for interim space until new Downtown schools open. The DOE also needs to make a more accurate assessment of the actual space that PS234 has, and not exaggerate it. Dan Golub, Deputy Director for Land Use & Development and Senior Policy Advisor for the Manhattan Borough President's Office, will also speak on the need to build more schools to keep up with new apartment construction.
