After School Programs
Purpose

The after school French classes are intended to be playful and interactive and have been developed for both Francophones and English speakers who want to learn French. These classes are run in public schools and are entirely managed by local volunteer parents under the direction of EFNY’s FLAM committee.

The cost of the program is minimized by a subsidy from the French government (FLAM, Français Language Maternelle or French as a Native Language) accorded to EFNY, and local public schools allow classrooms to be used free of charge. EFNY is able to offer some financial aid to qualified families.

EFNY carefully recruits teachers to ensure the highest quality of teaching.

Each EFNY site has different groups of students, hours, prices, teachers and constraints. As much as it is possible, EFNY works to standardize the program across all sites. At most sites (though there are exceptions), the classes for Kindergartners and first graders take place once per week, for two hours, whereas the classes for older children usually meet twice weekly for a total of four hours.

From a pedagogical point of view, it is essential that these older children meet two times per week so that they can focus on grammar, spelling and vocabulary, and also have time to work on cultural studies.
