Dual Language Programs
Purpose

All dual language classes are run by the New York City Department of Education and follow the DOE’s bilingual curriculum, which is a program of instruction whereby 50% of teaching happens in French and the other 50% in English. For the French-English programs that have opened since 2005, schools are progressively adding new grades to provide a continuity of bilingual education through grade 5.

EFNY continues to support the parents of students in these programs in their efforts to create bilingual programs after 5th grade. The parents’ commitment to this action is essential. It is the parents who have identified the middle schools that would be likely to embrace a bilingual program, and, working with EFNY, have taken the steps to create the program. EFNY continues to coordinate these efforts and promote the concept by fostering relationships with these schools and encouraging bilingual classes. EFNY is also working as a liaison between the DOE and the French Ministry of Education to recruit certified French teachers.
