EFNY at PS84 (Upper West Side)

Registrations for the Spring 2020 Semester is open now ! 

At PS84, the program is open to all local students, regardless of the school they attend. Classes take place on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Children can be registered to multiple classes as well as just once a week. Classes are two hours long, unless indicated otherwise. They are held on the premises of PS84.

Classes for the fall 2019 semester at PS84  will start on Monday, February 03, 2020 and end on Friday,  June 19, 2020.

Our program offers the opportunity to learn French, parctice, explore, progress and foster the language through a variety of classes such as drama, music, calligraphie, culture generale, adapted to your child’s grade and French language level. We provide classes, Francophone (French for Native Speakers) and Anglophone (French as a Second Language), organized in different level-appropriate classes as described below.

MONDAY

Le Francais par le Theatre (from 2nd to 5th grade) – Students will learn how to express themselves in public in french. This class is perfect for the students who need to improve their oral expression. Students fluent or advanced in french language welcome. Language skills will be studied during this class.

Le Francais par la Calligraphie (K and 1st grade) – They will learn the cursive writing as it is taught in France. It aims the acquisition of the writing skills, will focus on the perception of the writing plan, the care and the beauty of the letters. The cursive writing skills will help our bilingual students to better visualise and make the difference between the french and the english language. We will teach our students to care about the page layout of their writing and to freedom their imagination through the letters.

TUESDAY

FRENCH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE (K-5th)

Level 1 (K to 1st grade–  This class is an introduction to verbal communications and is adapted to the comprehension skills of young learners. The goal is to bring the children to express simple phrases in basic social situations through various activities: stories, creative projects, songs and scholastic games. Homework help will be also thought.

Advanced level (2nd to 5th grade)  –  Grade level-appropriate classes for students who have some knowledge of the French language but are not fluent, from PS84 or willing to join our Dual Language Program. We also offer homework help for PS84 students. The goal of this class is to expand the vocabulary, reinforce verbal expression and language skills, and develop basic writing skills.

All classes will  have a dedicated time to help students with their French homework. 

FRENCH FOR NATIVE SPEAKERS 

Culture Generale for native speakers (K , 1st, 2nd & 3rd grade) – Tuesday classes will focus on préhistoire-antiquité-début Moyen-Age. Students need to be fluent in french. Language skills will be studied during this class. There will be 1 class per grade.

L’atelier lecture (Book Club  for 4th to 5th grade)

Book club,  during this class, students will have the opportunity to read and study texts from different authors, periods and genres (short stories, novels, plays, poetry, BD, comic book, graphic novels…). They will discover famous figures of French literature as well as contemporary authors. They will also engage in conversation and creative writing activities to develop their vocabulary, imagination and composition skills.

 

WEDNESDAY

FRENCH FOR NATIVE SPEAKERS
Petits Francophones
  K–   This class is open to bilingual students in Kindergarten. In this class, all activities are conducted in French. It aims the acquisition of a rich oral language, organized and understandable by the other. The child speaks and is understood through the language. He learns to be attentive to messages addressed to him, to understand and respond appropriately. The child starts the basic acquisitions of the alphabet, the sounds and will be introduced to reading and writing in french.

Jeunes Francophones 1st grade  – This class is open to bilingual students in 1st grade who are already reading in English, and will be reading and writing in French. In this class, all activities are conducted in French. The child starts the basic acquisitions in reading, writing as well as grammar skills. The student will be taught to better differentiate english to french and to understand the basic grammar rules.

Moyens Francophones 2nd grade – This class is open to truly fluent in French students in 2nd and 3rd grades who are already reading in English, and are reading and writing in French. In this class, all activities are conducted in French. The child is faced with varied and somewhat complex texts, while learning basic rules of grammar, spelling and conjugation and begins to write short texts. The “dictees ” will be used as support for the learning.

Grands Francophones 3rd/4th/5th grade  –  This classes are open to students who are truly fluent in French, and focuses on oral and written expression, grammar and spelling. In this class, all activities are conducted in French. The child reads longer texts and consolidates its bases in grammar, spelling, conjugation and vocabulary. Emphasis is placed on written expression: namely write a short dialogue, short but varied texts (narrative, description, portrait.). Children are encouraged to read independently.  

THURSDAY

Le Francais par la Musique (K to 5th) – All students welcome.  In this class French language academics will be introduced in a new creative way, through the music.

Chercher, et trouver, chez l’enfant, la corde sensible, la note qui le fera vibrer, la chanson qui l’initiera, au delà de l’écoute, à la magie de la création musicale.
Initier les enfants à la connaissance intuitive, à la compréhension des rouages qui créent les musiques qui nous entourent, la mesure et les temps, la tonalité, les athmosphères majeures et mineures.
Leur faire découvrir le riche patrimoine de nos chansons françaises, pour petits et grands!

Beginner students (K & 1st grade) will discover french language through music, songs, composites or poems. This class is open to K and 1st graders.

Introduction to music (2nd grade) : In this creative class, the children will be introduced to musical concepts (melody, harmony, rhythm) through songs, games and dance. Introduction to music and musical instruments: By listening to a variety of musical works, students will explore the fundamentals of music theory, discover different families of instruments (strings, brass and percussion) and several musical styles (classical, jazz, pop, rap…). They will learn about tempo, melody, beat and rhythm, through songs and fun exercises.

Choir / Chorale / Band (3rd – 4th & 5th grade) : This class will give students the opportunity to develop their vocal and harmony skills and have a great time making music with their peers. Aspiring vocalists will come together to sing French songs and musicals. Through songs, games and exercises, student will develop proper singing techniques and explore the fundamentals of vocal performance and musical vocabulary. They might even write and perform their own original songs. This class is open to 4th and 5th graders. No prior singing experience required.

FRIDAY

Culture Generale – (2nd to 5th graders)
In this class French language academics will be introduced in a new creative way. Students will explore every aspect of French culture and heritage: history, arts (painting, literature, photography, cinema, architecture…), gastronomy, traditions, fashion. They will discover major figures from different period, like for example Gustave Eiffel, Les frères Lumière or Matisse and their work… These classes are open to 2nd and 5rd graders.

NEW !  Le français par la danse

In this class, children will discover the French-speaking culture through Dance. Students will learn how to connect dance to different type of arts and cultures of the francophone world, and will learn how dances also represent the values and beliefs of people.

They will study the history and the social aspect of different styles of dancing in French-speaking African and Caribbean countries.

Through the program, children will get to learn and practice three genres of dance: Contemporary dance, Urban dance and Cultural dance.

  • Contemporary dance : Introduction to ballet, body posture.
  • Urban dance: Breakdance, hip-hop, floor & stand up dances.
  • Cultural dance: Traditional dances from France, french speaking African countries and Caribbean

The EFNY program follows a French-only policy in all Francophone classes. Please help us with this by encouraging your child to follow this rule.
