EFNY at PS84 (Upper West Side)
Registration for the Spring 2019 Semester is open now!
At PS84, the program is open to all local students, regardless of the school they attend. Classes take place on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Fridays. Children meet once or twice a week depending on the class and level, and are two hours long, unless indicated otherwise.
Classes for the spring 2019 semester at PS84 will start on Friday, February 1st, 2019 and end on Friday, June 21, 2019.
We offer two types of classes, Francophone (French for Native Speakers) and Anglophone (French as a Second Language), arranged in different level-appropriate classes as described below. The EFNY program follows a French-only policy in all Francophone classes. Please help us with this by encouraging your child to follow this rule.
FRENCH FOR NATIVE SPEAKERS
Petits Francophones – This class is open to bilingual students in Kindergarten. In this class, all activities are conducted in French. It aims the acquisition of a rich oral language, organized and understandable by the other. The child speaks and is understood through the language. He learns to be attentive to messages addressed to him, to understand and respond appropriately. The child starts the basic acquisitions of the alphabet, the sounds and will be introduced to reading and writing in french.
Jeunes Francophones 1st grade – This class is open to bilingual students in 1st grade who are already reading in English, and will be reading and writing in French. In this class, all activities are conducted in French. The child starts the basic acquisitions in reading, writing as well as grammar skills. The student will be taught to better differentiate english to french and to understand the basic grammar rules.
Moyens Francophones 2nd grade – This class is open to truly fluent in French students in 2nd and 3rd grades who are already reading in English, and are reading and writing in French. In this class, all activities are conducted in French. The child is faced with varied and somewhat complex texts, while learning basic rules of grammar, spelling and conjugation and begins to write short texts. The “dictees ” will be used as support for the learning.
Grands Francophones 3rd/4th/5th grade – This classes are open to students who are truly fluent in French, and focuses on oral and written expression, grammar and spelling. In this class, all activities are conducted in French. The child reads longer texts and consolidates its bases in grammar, spelling, conjugation and vocabulary. Emphasis is placed on written expression: namely write a short dialogue, short but varied texts (narrative, description, portrait.). Children are encouraged to read independently.
Culture Generale – These classes will be held on Tuesdays and Fridays.
Tuesday class will focus on préhistoire-antiquité-début Moyen-Age. Students need to be fluent in french. Language skills will be studied during this class. This class is dedicated to 1st graders and 2nd graders.
Friday will focus among others, on important moments of French and world history, such as Life in the Middle Age, the Industrial Revolution, First and Second World Wars, Religion and its role in the society, cities and development etc. Language skills will be studied during this class. This class is dedicated to 2nd to 5th graders.
Middle School – These classes will be held on Wednesdays and Fridays.
On Wednesdays, this class is open to middle school students who are fluent in French, and focuses on elaborate language skills development. Students will be invited to work on different projects focusing on oral and writing language skills.
FRENCH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE : on Tuesdays
Jeunes (young) Anglophones – This is an introduction to French for Kindergarten and 1st graders. This class is an introduction to verbal communications and is adapted to the comprehension skills of young learners. The goal is to bring the children to express simple phrases in basic social situations through various activities: stories, creative projects, songs and scholastic games. Homework help will be also thought.
Moyens (advanced) Anglophones – For PS84 students, homework help will be also thought during the first part of the class. This is an advanced class for 2nd to 5th graders who have some knowledge of the French language but are not fluent. The objective of this class is to expand the vocabulary, reinforce verbal expression and language skills, and develop some basic writing skills.
Le Francais par le Theatre – Students will learn how to express themselves in public in french. This class is perfect for the students who need to improve their oral expression. Students from 2nd to 5th grade are welcome, fluent or advanced in french language. Language skills will be studied during this class. This class will be taught on Mondays from 3pm to 5pm.
Le Francais par la Calligraphie – New at EFNY PS84, this class will be proposed to K and 1st grade students. They will learn the cursive writing as it is taught in France. It aims the acquisition of the writing skills, will focus on the perception of the writing plan, the care and the beauty of the letters. The cursive writing skills will help our bilingual students to better visualise and make the difference between the french and the english language. We will teach our students to care about the page layout of their writing and to freedom their imagination through the letters. This class will be taught on Mondays from 3pm to 5pm.
